How to effectively clean a mirror

26-02-2021

Cleaning a hanging mirror in the bathroom, as well as any other mirror, seems like a simple task that doesn't require much time or effort.

Unfortunately, the truth is different and effectively cleaning a mirror may not be as easy as it may seem.

Often after cleaning, we can see streaks and stains that disrupt the image of a clean mirror.

In this short guide, we will try to explain which cleaning methods will be the best and what products we will need.

What do we need?

In order to clean the mirror as best as possible and make it shine for longer, we will need a few essential things:

  • A smooth microfiber cloth (we cannot replace the cloth with any other material)
  • Cotton cosmetic pads
  • A cleaning product containing alcohol
  • Vinegar (regular, spirit; it cannot be replaced with any other type)
  • Water

Of course, protective measures such as gloves and a mask will also come in handy.

Before we start cleaning, we need to mix water with vinegar in a 1:1 ratio, preferably in a container with a sprayer. For example, if we pour 200 milliliters of water, we add 200 milliliters of vinegar to it.

Cleaning technique

Once I have all the necessary items and the water and vinegar solution ready, we can start cleaning.

The first step will be to pre-clean the most visible stains.

To do this, we soak a cotton pad with alcohol and wipe all the stains from toothpaste, water streaks, and other dirt. For better results, we recommend doing this very thoroughly - it will make the rest of the work easier.

When we see that the most visible stains are gone, we can move on to the next step.
We lightly spray the mirror with the water and vinegar solution, and fold our cloth in half twice (this is not required, but it gives us more dry cleaning surface).
We wipe the glass surface from right to left, moving downwards.
We repeat this step, starting from the bottom this time.
If we haven't cleaned the mirror sufficiently, we can now focus on wiping the remaining stains.

Mirror like new

After completing all of the above steps, our mirror should shine like it's straight from the store.

We just need to note that the time and intensity of cleaning should be adjusted to the level of dirt on the mirror. If our mirror is only slightly dirty, we will spend much less time on it than one that has more dirt. With a really heavily soiled mirror, we will probably have to repeat the mentioned steps until it's clean.

Thank you for reading our short guide and we hope it has been or will be helpful. We encourage you to read our other texts, which can also help with everyday cleaning tasks.
